Security Screen Doors - A Few Things to Know

Front Door Locksets

Security screen doors are doors that provide an extra benefit other than that of a simple door. Security is the added extra benefit that these doors provide. If you live in a particularly troubled neighbourhood where there have been several incidents of burglary and theft, it would be smart to install security doors on all your entrances.

The design of the screen doors can be chosen, so that it complements the design of the door it is being placed in front of. This way; even when the actual doors are considerably over shadowed by the security screen doors; it does not diminish the door's own decorative qualities.

What sets apart these screen doors from a traditional screen door is that they incorporate grilles on their exterior. Traditional screen doors were simply used to let the air in and keep out the bugs and pests. The same idea has been taken, only with a twist of grilles, to provide extra security from unwanted people entering into your house.

These grilles are made with either cast iron, steel or any other sturdy metal which makes it impossible to break or penetrate the door it is set in front of. Aside from the grille, security screen doors are equipped with extra hinges. This makes sure that it is not easy to disengage the door. Besides the hinges, make sure that the locks used on the screen door are sturdy. These screens are usually constructed using different materials; make sure that the said material is of top quality and actually is what the manufacturer claims it to be.

These doors can be of various types i.e. single door, hinged, double door, sliding etc. You can choose the type of door you want according to your own preference.

They are extremely heavy what with the metal grilles and frames; they will need to be fit in frames that can stand their weight. Therefore, if you are looking into installing them in your house, make sure that you reinforce the framing around the actual door such that it can withstand the weight.

Next, you will need to know about the costs associated with installing these screens. A standard sized, 32 to 36 inches wide, metal security screen door can typically cost anything around $75 to $200. If you are aiming to get a storm door as a metal security door with decorative patterns or designs, it may cost somewhere between $200 to $750. A standard storm cum security door with no special patterns or designs may cost as low as $100 and as high as $300. If, before installing the security screen doors, you find that you must have your door frames reinforced this would mean an additional cost of around $50 to $250; depending on the quality of services and materials you use. Besides these, some companies provide the facility of choosing your set of doorknobs or locksets. If you decide to opt for it, it would mean extra charges of around $20 to $170.
