Reduce the Risk of Break-Ins by Upgrading Your Entry System

Front Door Locksets

Thinking about a new front door? For a few dollars more, you can buy peace of mind as well. Upgrading your existing entry system, can be the difference between a thief getting into your home or giving up and moving on. It is something everyone should consider, especially in today's day and age, when an average break and enter takes approximately 1-4 minutes. Only, 1-4 minutes for a thief to kick in your door, grab your valuables and get out. It can take you longer to find your keys and unlock your front door, than for a thief to kick in your door and get inside your house. All it takes is one hard kick.

Over 70% of all break-ins are done through the front door. This is why Police are becoming more and more concerned over the weakness of the average front door. Old homes are security concerns, simply because of the age of the frames themselves. Old wood will rot and warp and the studs in the frame weaken over time, jeopardising the strength of the frame. Replacing a door in an old rotted door frame would be an exercise in futility. In a newer home? New builder installed frames are made from soft wood and the screws holding it together are less than 1 inch long. One hard kick and the door will come right out of that frame. Replacing your lock or lockset to increase your security? A good quality lock is irrelevant if you don't start with a good quality door and professionally installed frame. *"It's like putting a lock on a paper bag." (Peel Regional detective Ashley Kimlin, Brampton Guardian March 31, 2011.)

To increase your security, you should replace your existing door and door frame if it is more than 7 years old to maintain security levels. The average builder's door and frame is built to last 7 years. In newer homes, doors can be re-secured with longer screws, however, existing screw holes may not be usable, and hanging a door securely can be a challenge. To secure a door properly, the screws should be at least 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches long. It is advisable to contact a professional to complete this process to ensure the highest security and a properly hung door. Please call a professional to assess your door and frame needs. They will be able to advise you whether you can just replace your door or whether you should replace your frame as well. In most homes, it is the integrity of the door frame itself that is the security concern.

Upgrading your door and frame and having it professionally installed can dramatically increase your security. Once you make these improvements, you have significantly reduced your chances of having your home being broken into. *"If everyone did it, you would see an enormous drop in the number of B&Es" (Peel Regional detective Ashley Kimlin, Brampton Guardian March 31, 2011.)
